Blog: Old Technology is Hurting Your Firm – How to Know When It’s Time to Upgrade

A Q&A with Paul Telesco, VP of Technical Services

Concerned that your technology systems might be working against you? Lagging and outdated systems can hurt a law firm’s business and waste valuable time and resources. Poor performing technology makes it difficult for law firms to compete and adapt to changes in the industry.

We sat down with Paul Telesco, VP of Technical Services at LOGICFORCE, to discuss telltale signs of outdated technology that may be hurting your business and how to plan for hardware and software updates.

Q: How can lagging and outdated technology hurt your law firm?

A. Lagging and outdated technology causes frustration among team members and clients and puts law firms at a higher risk for cyberattacks. It can also create ethical issues. Old technology makes it hard for attorneys to adhere to ABA Model Rules regarding technology competence.

Q: What is the biggest indicator that an IT system is outdated and lagging?

A: One key signal that an IT system is outdated is decreased efficiency of your employees and decreased margins and/or client satisfaction as a result. Outdated technology inevitably creates problems that cause work stoppages.

Current, effective technology will drive business. If technology is prohibiting growth and employee efficiency, it’s time for an update. If your technology is not allowing your team to perform at its full potential, team members will become frustrated, which can lead to increased downtime and costs.

Q: How can you address the issues of outdated and lagging technology?

A: An assessment-based approach that evaluates the entire IT ecosystem and end user experiences is the best place to begin. The results of this assessment will pinpoint issues so you can develop a plan that solves problems in a holistic way.

Q. Where is a good starting place for law firms needing to upgrade their technology?

After the assessment is completed, part of a holistic plan should involve considering cloud-based and subscription services when possible. Technology integration is a key indicator of how well they can be used to further business goals and support growth. Cloud services are the easiest offerings to update to the latest versions of your solutions and can be quickly integrated across your entire organization.
